Devo for 06/29/2025 service- Message by Pastor Clint Sprague
Pastor Clint continued taking us on a “Hike Through the Sermon on the Mount” this past Sunday. With our Salvation being the trailhead, the “Hike” itself is how we are transformed into the person God created us to be. So the equation, “Salvation + Transformation” equals “The Way That Leads to Life.”
Our topic this past week was another tough one, as Jesus talked about divorce. Pastor Clint did a great job of laying out the ideas of cultural and biblical context, as well as the importance of looking at both when reading and understanding scripture.
The bottom line is that marriage is God’s idea, and He is clear that it is for one man and one woman to be in a covenant relationship for life.
“Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.” Hebrews 13:4
But we have to remember these points that Pastor Clint raised:
Marriage is not easy, but it’s worth it!
Marriage is between two people in a sinful world!
Satan wants to destroy marriage!
Knowing this, we all have to remember there is no condemnation in those who are in Jesus, and our God is full of love and grace.
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:23,24
There are no stones to be thrown!
Pastor Clint did challenge us to set a high standard when it comes to marriage. In order to hold our marriages to a high standard, we have to understand and walk in our roles as husbands in the relationship.
Now, to walk through everything the bible says about being a husband would take a MUCH longer devotional, so I am going to sum it up with a comparison of what the world says versus what the bible says when it comes to a word that is routinely misused when talking about marriage: Headship.
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Ephesians 5:23
The World says: I am the head of my wife, so she has to take orders from me, and I make all of the decisions.
Godly headship says I am to care for my wife and serve her just like Jesus cares for and serves me.
As the head of my wife and family, I express my love through sacrifice. In fact, this is how Jesus lived: He sacrificed Himself, His time, His attention, and His life—all for us!
“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” Ephesians 5:21
As I said earlier, this just scratches the surface of how God calls us to be as husbands and men, so my prayer is that this devo provokes thought and a desire to learn more about our roles as men. Whether you are married, were married, have not married, or you plan on getting married, knowing and understanding our roles is paramount to walking in the sonship given to us by God!!
Don’t forget to invite God into your day!
